Compassionate Allowances Event in Washington DC on December 6th

Dear HDSA Friends and Advocates:

On December 6, 2012, Michael J. Astrue, Commissioner of the Social Security Administration (SSA), will hold a Compassionate Allowances event in the Hart Senate Office Building, Washington, DC, from 10:00-11:30 a.m.

Among the speakers will be HDSA CEO, Louise Vetter, who will thank the commissioner for his work on behalf of the HD community.

We would like to give HD families in the area an opportunity to personally thank the Commissioner and celebrate the addition of both juvenile and adult-onset HD to the Compassionate Allowance Listings (CAL) this year.

If you are interested in attending the event, please RSVP to Jane Kogan (jkogan@hdsa.org).

While we will be commemorating and celebrating the addition of Juvenile Onset HD to the list of conditions this past August, and the planned addition of Adult Onset HD in December, the event is a celebration of the CAL reaching 200 conditions. Compassionate Allowances are a way of quickly identifying medical conditions that are so severe that they clearly qualify for disability benefits with minimal objective medical evidence.  (For more information go to: www.socialsecurity.gov/compassionateallowances.)

We hope many of you can attend this event and hope that those who cannot will spend a few moments thinking about our HD families who will directly benefit from these accomplishments. Please also join us in thanking all of the HDSA advocates and staff who have made this possible.

Together we can truly help improve the quality of life for everyone affected by Huntington’s disease.
